Have you tuned into Hysteria! on Peacock yet? The series dropped all eight of its episodes last week, making for a perfect pre-Halloween binge for anyone interested in heavy metal, Satanic Panic, 1980s hairstyles, high-school drama, and certain members of horror royalty turning up in unexpected places. It’s not a spoiler to say Bruce Campbell‘s in the cast… but when you get to episode five, “Mother,” you’re treated to a surprise dual cameo. Just in case you haven’t watched “Mother” yet, here’s one of these: Episode five gives us an extended flashback puzzling through the troubled mind of Tracy—one of … Read more

The VW ID. Buzz was worth the seven-year wait

Perched in the driver’s seat, I’m not sure why you would need to be, anyway. Nothing about the Buzz’s driving style demands you rag it through the corners, although the car coped very well on the very twisty sections of our route up the shore of the Tomales Bay. Like last week’s Porsche Macan, the single-motor model is the one I’d pick—again, it’s the version that’s cheaper, lighter, and has a longer range, albeit only just. And this might be the biggest stumbling block for some Buzz fans who were waiting to push the button. With 86 kWh useable (91 … Read more

218 Layers With Superior Scaling

Kioxia’s booth at FMS 2024 was a busy one with multiple technology demonstrations keeping visitors occupied. A walk-through of the BiCS 8 manufacturing process was the first to grab my attention. Kioxia and Western Digital announced the sampling of BiCS 8 in March 2023. We had touched briefly upon its CMOS Bonded Array (CBA) scheme in our coverage of Kioxial’s 2Tb QLC NAND device and coverage of Western Digital’s 128 TB QLC enterprise SSD proof-of-concept demonstration. At Kioxia’s booth, we got more insights. Traditionally, fabrication of flash chips involved placement of the associate logic circuitry (CMOS process) around the periphery … Read more

Game-Changer: How the World’s First GPU Leveled Up Gaming and Ignited the AI Era

In 1999, fans lined up at Blockbuster to rent chunky VHS tapes of The Matrix. Y2K preppers hoarded cash and canned Spam, fearing a worldwide computer crash. Teens gleefully downloaded Britney Spears and Eminem on Napster. But amid the caffeinated fizz of turn-of-the-millennium tech culture, something more transformative was unfolding. The release of NVIDIA’s GeForce 256 twenty-five years ago today, overlooked by all but hardcore PC gamers and tech enthusiasts at the time, would go on to lay the foundation for today’s generative AI. The GeForce 256 wasn’t just another graphics card — it was introduced as the world’s first … Read more

Amazon exec tells employees to work elsewhere if they dislike RTO policy

Amazon workers are being reminded that they can find work elsewhere if they’re unhappy with Amazon’s return-to-office (RTO) mandate. In September, Amazon told staff that they’ll have to RTO five days a week starting in 2025. Amazon employees are currently allowed to work remotely twice a week. A memo from CEO Andy Jassy announcing the policy change said that “it’s easier for our teammates to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture” when working at the office. On Thursday, at what Reuters described as an “all-hands meeting” for Amazon Web Services (AWS), AWS CEO Matt Garman reportedly told workers: If … Read more

Kioxia Demonstrates Optical Interface SSDs for Data Centers

A few years back, the Japanese government’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO ) allocated funding for the development of green datacenter technologies. With the aim to obtain up to 40% savings in overall power consumption, several Japanese companies have been developing an optical interface for their enterprise SSDs. And at this year’s FMS, Kioxia had their optical interface on display. For this demonstration, Kioxia took its existing CM7 enterprise SSD and created an optical interface for it. A PCIe card with on-board optics developed by Kyocera is installed in the server slot. An optical interface allows data … Read more
