Research monkeys still having a ball days after busting out of lab, police say

If you need any inspiration for cutting loose and relaxing this weekend, look no further than a free-wheeling troop of monkeys that broke out of their South Carolina research facility Wednesday and, as of noon Friday, were still “playfully exploring” with their newfound freedom. In an update Friday, the police department of Yemassee, SC said that the 43 young, female rhesus macaque monkeys are still staying around the perimeter of the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Facility. “The primates are exhibiting calm and playful behavior, which is a positive indication,” the department noted. The fun-loving furballs got free after a caretaker … Read more

Solar power from space? Actually, it might happen in a couple of years.

That approach starts in low-Earth orbit rather than 36,000 km away from the surface of the Earth. Aetherflux plans to begin with a single satellite, launching into an orbit about 500 km above the planet on a SpaceX transporter mission about 12 to 15 months from now. This initial satellite will be based on a commercially available bus from Apex, which will produce, on average, about 1 kilowatt of power. It’s a modest amount, enough electricity to power a dishwasher. This satellite will also include a high-powered infrared laser to transmit this power back to Earth. A mobile ground station, … Read more

US Healthcare System Deploys AI Agents

The U.S. healthcare system is adopting digital health agents to harness AI across the board, from research laboratories to clinical settings. The latest AI-accelerated tools — on display at the NVIDIA AI Summit taking place this week in Washington, D.C. — include NVIDIA NIM, a collection of cloud-native microservices that support AI model deployment and execution, and NVIDIA NIM Agent Blueprints, a catalog of pretrained, customizable workflows.  These technologies are already in use in the public sector to advance the analysis of medical images, aid the search for new therapeutics and extract information from massive PDF databases containing text, tables … Read more

After seeing hundreds of launches, SpaceX’s rocket catch was a new thrill

The engines switched off, and there it was. Many of the spectators lucky enough to be there jumped up and down with joy, hugged their friends, or let out an ecstatic yell. I snapped a few final photos and returned to his laptop, grinning, speechless, and started wondering how I could put this all into words. Once the smoke cleared, at first glance, the rocket looked as good as new. There was no soot on the outside of the booster, as it is on the Falcon 9 rocket after returning from space. This is because the Super Heavy booster and … Read more

NVIDIA Works With Deloitte to Deploy Digital AI Agents for Healthcare

Ahead of a visit to the hospital for a surgical procedure, patients often have plenty of questions about what to expect — and can be plenty nervous. To help minimize pre-surgery jitters, NVIDIA and Deloitte are developing AI agents using NVIDIA AI to bring the next generation of digital, frontline teammates to patients before they even step foot inside the hospital. These virtual teammates can have natural, human-like conversations with patients, answer a wide range of questions and provide supporting guidance prior to preadmission appointments at hospitals. This demo shows one virtual representative in action, answering patient questions: Working with … Read more

Studies of migraine’s many triggers offer paths to new therapies

He also tried levcromakalim, another blood vessel opener that lowers blood pressure. It’s a potassium-channel opener, and this, too, caused migraine attacks for all 16 people in the study. To Ashina, these experiments suggest that medicines that turn off migraine-inducing pathways at or before the point of potassium release could be of benefit. There might be side effects, such as changes in blood pressure, but Ashina notes there are potassium-channel subtypes that may be limited to blood vessels in the brain. Targeting those specific channels would be safer. “I personally really like the potassium-channel track,” says Russo. “I think if … Read more
